When Alex and Justine moved into their new home, the front yard had been neglected for a long time. The beautiful and majestic cedar trees had shed their needles, preventing the lawn from thriving. Being nature enthusiasts and eco-conscious homeowners, they wanted a fresh start for their yard, using environmentally friendly methods.
Here’s how we transformed their outdoor space into a functional, sustainable, and beautiful landscape:
Defining Boundaries with Metal Edging
We started by using metal edging to create clear boundaries between the lawn and planting areas. This simple solution not only added structure to the yard but also protected the plants from lawn mower damage. Metal edging is an ideal choice for neat, long-lasting garden borders.
Turning Moss into an Asset
The cedar trees had encouraged moss growth, overtaking much of the lawn. While many people view moss as a problem, it’s a powerful oxygen producer and can add character to a garden. We decided with Alex to preserve the moss, enriching the soil and adding seeds that thrive in mossy, shaded environments. This approach brought new life to the challenging areas of the yard.
Personalized Plant Selection
When it came to plant selection, we prefer to visit nurseries with our clients. We believe plants have a personality, and allowing our clients to choose their own plants helps create a deeper bond with their garden. After a delightful nursery visit with Alex, we planted the selected greenery and completed the planting phase.
A Natural-Looking Creek Bed
In the roadside section of the front yard, under the trees, there was an area that gave us the feeling of a flowing creek at first glance. This section made up one-third of the entire garden, and while Alex and his wife Justine are nature lovers, we understood that maintaining such a large yard could become burdensome for a busy couple. To address this, we covered the area with weed control fabric, topped it with river stones, and added ferns to evoke the sense of a natural creek passing through the garden.
A Flexible Vegetable Garden
For the vegetable garden, we introduced metal edging to give Alex complete flexibility. This setup allows the vegetable garden to be expanded or removed effortlessly. Many vegetable gardens are built with ambitious plans but, over time, may become neglected if the owners cannot dedicate enough time. In such cases, the removal of the garden can become another costly project. Our flexible, sustainable, and minimalistic vegetable garden design addressed these concerns perfectly. Alex and Justine are already planning to expand it next year!
Six months after the project’s completion, we revisited the yard. It was thriving! The lawn, plants, vegetable garden, and creek bed were all healthy and harmonious. This success was a testament to the blend of our sustainable landscaping methods and the homeowners’ commitment to caring for their yard.
This transformation shows how even a neglected space can be turned into a vibrant and sustainable landscape. Whether you’re interested in xeriscaping, personalized plant selection, or flexible gardening solutions, there’s always a way to create a garden that reflects your lifestyle and values.
